Coyote Morning

Coyote Morning

It’s been a while since I last saw a Coyote in my neighborhood. As with many wild creatures, they usually see me first and disappear before I can raise my camera in the hopes of snapping a pic of a hind end in rapid retreat.

However this morning I was treated to a long session of watching a pair of these beautiful creatures as they groomed, unearthed some cached food and had a snack, and then played together. They were just far away enough upstream that my camera’s lens could reach them, but they were not aware of me, as I was tucked into my new favorite hiding spot across the river.

When I first saw them, one was grooming the other, maybe removing ticks from around the other one’s face? This went on for quite a while. Then the larger of the two went toward the water and unearthed what must have been the remains of a meal, although my view was blocked by a gravel mound.

It appeared that they were an adult and a youngster. In the pics and video, the bigger (older?) one has lighter eyes, and is more filled out. The smaller one waited its turn to eat, making me think it was a youngster or maybe just of lower social status?

After eating there was some play, some sniffing around, and some scent marking, and after about twenty minutes, they disappeared in the same direction they had come from.

This video is nine minutes, but I couldn’t bring myself to edit it down much more than that because I found everything these beautiful creatures did utterly fascinating.

Their movement and behavior seemed so familiar to this lifelong dog owner, yet they were unmistakably wild. As often happens when I brush up against nature in this way I felt the separateness that being human has devolved into fall away.
