The Daily Show

On many days when I’m out looking for birds or other creatures nothing unexpected shows up. I snap pictures of species I’ve seen hundreds of times because you never know when you might capture an unusual behavior or view of a Song Sparrow that has never been seen before, not even in the 4 million Song Sparrow images crowding your computer and making the folks at Emerald Technologies think you’re bonkers for wanting still more space for all those Song Sparrow pics.

Song Sparrow, a year-round resident and underappreciated vocalist of our area.

This post is a celebration of the ordinary things I am lucky to see at the river pretty much every day in mid-summer 2024. I was raised being encouraged to look at everything as though seeing it for the first and last time, a habit that has taught me to see the extraordinary in these ordinary beings. After all, when I really stop and look, amazement nearly always follows.

Turkey Vultures, preening and resting
Northwestern Pond Turtle
Blue-eyed Darner
For as sassy and loud as Belted Kingfishers are they are surprisingly skittish. I see, or at least hear, their distinctive rattle almost every day, but it’s usually at a discouraging distance for photos.
Common Mergansers are indeed the most common duck I see year round.
Common Raven
Web and its creator
I don’t remember seeing so many Wilson’s Warblers in previous years.
Scrub Jay bath time
Rough-skinned Newt
Yellow Warbler
Red-tailed Hawk

Yes, I’m happy to be part of this blog. So many of these creatures, not all, I see on my walks.

I don’t know which of those yellow warblers I’m seeing but I’ve seen more of them than ever before. They are beautiful!

They can be really hard to tell apart. I often am not sure till I get the pics up on the computer screen.
