On many days when I’m out looking for birds or other creatures nothing unexpected shows up. I snap pictures of species I’ve seen hundreds of times because you never know when you might capture an unusual behavior or view of a Song Sparrow that has never been seen before, not even in the 4 million Song Sparrow images crowding your computer and making the folks at Emerald Technologies think you’re bonkers for wanting still more space for all those Song Sparrow pics.

This post is a celebration of the ordinary things I am lucky to see at the river pretty much every day in mid-summer 2024. I was raised being encouraged to look at everything as though seeing it for the first and last time, a habit that has taught me to see the extraordinary in these ordinary beings. After all, when I really stop and look, amazement nearly always follows.
